Halafihi Akauola Hasn’t Missed a Single Day of Work Since 2022
Halafihi Akauola joined the PALM Scheme through RWM in November 2022 with a clear goal: to support his family and build something lasting. Since then, he has been making a quiet but powerful impact every day.
Originally from Tonga, Halafihi began his journey in regional New South Wales as a labourer at a meat processing facility. Through commitment, consistency and skill, he was promoted to higher duties as a slaughterman in 2024, one of the most demanding and highly skilled jobs on the floor.
Since the day he started, Halafihi has never taken a sick day.
It is an outstanding achievement and a clear reflection of his work ethic, reliability and resilience. He turns up each day, ready to do the job and gives nothing less than a full day’s work.
Halafihi is highly respected by his supervisors, who describe him as the perfect employee. He works with focus, never complains and takes pride in what he does. His knife skills are exceptional, and his quiet leadership has not gone unnoticed.
His employer, Chris, the General Manager, shared his praise.
“Halafihi has been with us since November 2022 and has not had a single sick day. That speaks for itself. He is doing one of the most important and highest paid roles on the floor and doing it with absolute professionalism. He has great knife skills, earns the respect of his supervisors and never causes a fuss. He just turns up and does an excellent job. His contribution deserves to be recognised by the Tongan community.”
What makes Halafihi’s story special is not just the role he has achieved, but the way he has gone about it. No shortcuts, no noise, just a strong and steady presence backed by hard work and humility.
That same mindset carries through to the life he is building beyond work.
Through his income in Australia, Halafihi has been able to build his mother, a widow, a new three-bedroom home, complete with modern facilities, a kitchen and indoor bathrooms. His older brother and sister-in-law help care for her, and his sister often drops her children off to visit and spend time in the new home. At the end of last year, Halafihi also bought the family a car, helping them get around more easily.
Now, with strong foundations behind him, he is focused on what comes next.
“I’m looking to keep building my skills at work and take on the life opportunities ahead,” he said.
His journey is one the Tongan community can be proud of. Through the PALM Scheme, Halafihi has shown what is possible when opportunity meets dedication. He is a valued member of the team and a great example of what it means to show up, do the work and lead by example.
Pattson Tutu worked for RWM within the meat processing industry in Victoria part of the PALM Scheme for three years before returning home to the Solomon Islands in 2023. During this time Pattson worked on the production line as a labourer and was actively engaged with the community. His Site Manager said “Pattson was a dedicated and focused worker in the meat processing industry, he was also involved with the local community and attended church weekly,”

Reconnecting in their home country
One year later, his Site Manager, travelled to Savo Island, a small village in the Solomon Islands to meet Pattson, which was a heartwarming and eye-opening trip. "It was really emotional being able to see Pattson again. I spent a lot of time with him and other Solomon Island workers during their time here in Australia, celebrating the good and bad. They've become like family to me," said his Site Manager.
Witnessing Pattson's journey from arriving to Australia in 2019, to achieving many milestones and goals moved his site manager. "His goals were to support his family financially and improve their standard of living while he worked in Australia. He's so humble about what he has achieved," they added, highlighting Pattson's admirable humility amongst his grand achievements.
Impact and success beyond borders
During their trip, his site manager witnessed the impact of Pattson's accomplishments for his family and wider community. “With money saved working in Australia, he's built three houses, for himself and his siblings, one of which they call the 'canteen' which sells groceries and essentials to village locals," they shared. “Now that Pattson and his wife are expecting their first child, the properties he has built has taken away a lot of stress for this family and has laid solid financial foundations," said his site manager.
Since returning to his village, Pattson was appointed as a youth coordinator at his church and has also invested in boats for transportation, enhancing accessibility between islands and contributing to the economic growth of his community. "His whole island has benefited with better access to groceries and transport, while he is inspiring and educating the next generation in his village," his site manager said said, highlighting the broader impact of opportunities through the PALM Scheme.
