From barber bike to barber shop, how the PALM scheme changed Kelly's life

When Kelly Bakotee left the Solomon Islands for Australia in August 2023 through Regional Workforce Management, he already knew exactly what he wanted the opportunity to mean for his family. He'd been cutting hair since 2016, running a mobile barber setup from a bicycle back home with basic tools and none of the equipment needed to really do the job justice. Life on the island wasn't easy, and Kelly felt that weight every day.


"Back on the island life is very hard, you have to struggle to get money to put food on the table," Kelly said.

So when he came to Australia through the PALM scheme, he carried one goal with him: build a proper barber shop back home, one that could actually support his family.


"My aim to come here was to get new tools and equipment for my barber shop back on the island," he said. "For now, I've already done everything and it's gone smoothly. My barber shop has already started."


It's a goal that puts Kelly alongside more than half of RWM's PALM employees, with 52 percent citing building a business back home as one of their biggest reasons for making the move.


A shop, two rentals and a home for his parents


The barber shop was just the start. Kelly has since built two rental properties, both already tenanted and a home for his parents to live in. He's opened a small food shop in his community too.


"When I came here, my family back home was very happy, because I'm the one that came and helped them," Kelly said.


There's real pride in his voice when he talks about what that support has meant, not just money sent home but a home built, a business started, a family looked after. And he hasn't stopped there. Kelly now spends his time training others in his village to cut hair, passing on the skills and the tools that changed things for him.

"I like helping others, doing haircuts and training them, just encouraging them to keep going, whatever your mindset or your goal is," he said.


Backed by a team that showed up


Kelly is candid about how big a jump it was moving to Australia, English included and he doesn't shy away from how hard that first stretch was.


"When I first came here, I wasn't very good at speaking English," he said. "The team at RWM really helped and supported me. Every time I didn't know what to do, my RWM Site Manager, Ashley, told me to come to him and he would help."


That support runs both ways. Staying focused on the goal

Kelly's advice for other employees coming to Australia through the scheme is simple and it's the same principle that carried him from a barber bike to a barber shop.


"When you come here, you'll see a lot of new things and meet new people and it may take your focus away at the start," he said. "My advice is just focus on your goal, your aim. At the end you will receive what you came here to work hard for."


It's the kind of focus that makes for a dependable workforce too. 93 percent of RWM's PALM employees say they want to return to work with RWM again after their visa expires and 98 percent have completed, started or are planning further training and qualifications while on placement, employees who are building for the future both on site and back home.


For Kelly, the goal is already paying off, not just for him but for his parents who settled into their new home, for the tenants in his rentals and for the next generation of barbers back home learning from someone who made it work with Regional Workforce Management backing him.
